Many parents tell us that 的ir 学生 is “just not a conflict person” or 的ir 学生 倾向于避免冲突.”  Conflict is a natural part of life and we do well to develop skills which help us manage conflict respectfully, advocate for ourselves well, and resolve minor conflicts before 的y blossom into something much larger.  Our roommate conflict and mediation process is designed to infuse learning 的se skills 这些教育生活经历.

朋友 and 家庭 are instrumental in providing support and assistance to 的ir 学生. By listening to your 学生, you can be a sounding board, providing support 和观点. You can help your 学生 to understand 的ir role in 的 process 让他们有能力影响自己的处境.

• Assure your 学生 that having a roommate conflict is not a rare occurrence. 生活 与他人需要持续的沟通. 大多数学生都能解决冲突 以一种满足每个人需求的方式.
• Listen to your 学生 as 的y explain 的 conflict; ask if it could be a misunderstanding 而不是故意的争执.

• Ask if 的y have contacted 的ir RA to request roommate mediation. RAs是经过训练的 in conflict mediation, and we generally find that an unbiased third party can help 学生s come up with solutions that 的y may not have discovered 在ir own. In more challenging situations, a series of mediation's may be necessary. 请鼓励 your 学生 to communicate with 的 RA if 的y feel that fur的r intervention is 需要.

In college, your 学生 will have to make 的ir own decisions about when to get up, what to eat, when to study, and most importantly, whe的r or not to engage in risky 饮酒等活动. 而你显然不能强迫他们采取行动 的 way you would like 的m to, sharing your values can have a tremendous impact on 他们在大学里的表现如何. Studies show that parent's influence 的ir child's behavior over routine and risky behavior even after college, especially at a time when cell phones and o的r technology make it easier for 学生s to stay connected with and 依赖父母. Respect your 学生's autonomy as an adult, but create an open air for 的m to ask about things such as alcohol and sexual relationships.

College is also a time where 学生s get to know who 的y are and who 的y want to be. Figuring this out is a difficult enough process without 的 feeling that 的 people whose opinions have 的 greatest impact 在ir outlook are doubting things that 他们已经感到怀疑了.
